Create a Certificate Signing Request on Windows 2003 


How to generate a Certificate Siging Request (CSR) on a Windows 2003 Server.

This article applies only to dedicated server and VPS accounts.

The first step in generating a Certificate Signing Request is to login to your VPS or Dedicated Server and open up the IIS Manager. Next, locate the site in IIS for which you would like to generate the certificate, right-click on it, then click Properties.



Once your have the properties dialog box up, click on the Directory Security tab and click the Server Certificate button.



First you will be present with the welcome screen, simply click Next here.



Next choose the option to create a new Certificate and click Next.



Then select the option to prepare the request now but send it later and click Next.



Now type a name for the certificate, it can be anything you like but it's customary to use the domain name.



Next input your organization's information and click Next.



Next input the "common name" for the site. This step is the most important and must match the domain name you wish to secure exactly.



Next enter the regional information (don't abbreviate the state) and click Next.



Now input a file name to save the CSR to and click Next.



Lastly verify all the information and click Next and Finish.



The last step is to open the text file you create and cut and paste that information and submit it to a Certificate Authority for signing. The text should look similar to the following.
